  • Ramakrishna is a Hindu branch dedicated to meditation and education. This logo is over the gateway to the Ramakrishna college.
  • Ramakrishna Meditation Hall. Note the British influence on the architecture. This building is only a few years old and is a refreshing respite from the chaos and noise of the surrounding city.

  • Inside the totally silent Meditation Hall.
  • Inside the extensive library of Sri Ramakrishna college. The book collection is extraordinary, covering every imaginable subject, with special focus on religions and the sciences.

  • Kapaleeshwarer Temple dedicated primarily to Ganesh (the four-armed elephant, son of Shiva and Parvati), god of good luck, remover of obstacles, and patron of scribes. Note that his right tusk is depicted as broken off, and it was with the broken fragment that he penned the Mahabharata, the description of the adventures of Krishna. (Fortunately, he has several opposable thumbs.) This temple is different from most others in the Dravidian style in that many of the detailed figures are recognizably human and not stylized, even grotesque, gods and demons.
