  • Arriving at our houseboat. Our luggage is being hauled by a crew member. We had envisioned a lone houseboat on a tranquil canal. Close, but no cigar. It was tranquil, once we got out onto the lake, but there were dozens, perhaps 100, houseboats.
  • Our houseboat, the "White Water." With a speed of 3-4 mph, there's not much white water involved. The dock is in Allepey. The boats are on a rice barge hull, which is made without a single nail. Each Anjali wood plank is joined to the next, using coir rope and then coated with blackresin made from boiled cashew nuts and fish oil. The houseboats are air conditioned, and each of the bedrooms has a private bath. We were the only passengers on the White Water (capacity four people in two bedrooms). There was a crew of four, including a fantastic cook.
