  • Spice warehouses and processors on the right. Note the tuk-tuks. (Tuk-tuks originated in Thailand and replaced rickshaws and bikeshaws in India. They're faster than their predecessors, but they're noisy, polluting, and generally unsafe. But, they're cheap!)

  • A plaque in St. Francis Church, built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars. Vasco da Gama was buried in the church for 14 years from 1524, but was dug up and reinterred in Portugal.
  • Vasco da Gama's burial plot is in the little brass enclosure in the left foreground. The cloth hangings are fans, operated by pulling on the horizontal ropes. The ropes go through the walls and were pulled by fan operators pulling down on the ropes, like bell-pullers, on the outside of the wall.
