  • Vedagirishvara Temple in Tirukkalikundram, near Mamallapuram. Sometimes called Eagle Temple, because, for many years two eagles would arrive, supposedly from Varanasi (2,000 miles away). Their on-time performance was iffy, and they no longer show up at all. You (but not I) can reach the temple via 500+ stairs, where the view is alledged to be spectacular.

  • The roads are in generally pretty good shape, but they're filled with obstacles, bicycles, tuk-tuks (in cities), motor bikes, pedestrians, other cars, trucks, and fairly frequently, cattle or goats. This is a typical rural road.
