  • Feed me or get out of my way!
  • Sri Meenakshi Temple from across the street. It has five towers; the other four somewhat smaller than this one, but they are equally ornate. The temple is a square covering 17 acres. It is dedicated to the three-breasted, fish-eyed goddess Meenakshi, and it is considered to be the absolute epitome of Hindu architecture. ("Fish-eye" in Hindu lore is supposed to mean "perfect eyes.") This tower is 170 feet tall and has thousands of figures on its four faces. The legend is that the third breast would go away when Meenakshi met her husband, and so it did when she met Shiva. The temple dates to 1560. It was its natural beige color until 1960 when it was painted as you see it today. It is completely refurbished every 12 years. The last refurbishment was in 2009.
