  • Poster commemorating the 59th birthday of the son (4th from right) of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. The son has an ego as big as any raja who ever lived! (He was elected Member of Parliament and refuses to speak English, although that is the official language of Parliament. It is rumored that his refusal has less to do with unwillingness to speak English than inability. Meanwhile it appears that he cannot be seated unless he agrees to speak English. This may be in error, since it comes from our driver who didn't speak English himself. Anyhow, it's a conundrum.)

  • This is the Mariamman Teppakkulam tank. We hit it on the day of the Teppam (Float) Festival. The "tank" is dry and serves as a cricket field most of the year, but it is flooded for the Float Festival. The temple you see to the rear of the stairs is on pontoons and contains the effigy of the local god (not the son of the Chief Minister), and at the appointed hour, with much fanfare and music so loud that your clothing vibrates, it goes on a circumnavigation of the tank, around the permanent island temple (off screen on the left).
