  • Sometimes spelled "Beit..." in Guide books. A Roman town mostly from around the 5th and 6th Centuries, but much dating before then. It includes many mosaics, Byzantine baths with a very large courtyard and portico. The main drag is impressive, as is a 6,000-seat theater.
  • A model of Bet She'an. The square structure in the center is the baths; the theater is on the far right.

  • The theater viewed from an upper level exit/entrance. The mound in the background is a "tel" upon which succeeding layers of the town was built. There are 18 levels of city within the tel.
  • Nazareth. Today's population around 63,747, give or take. It came into its own in the 6th Century, with reports of several miracles, and rumors that the synagogue where Jesus learned to write was there. In addition, there's the Basilica of the Annunciation, run by the Franciscans. The basilica is built over the earlier Church of the Annunciation. (The Annunciation is when the Angel Gabriel told Mary that she had been selected to be MARY, mother of Jesus.) The basilica was built in 2000, with contributions from all over the world. The church at the upper right is St. Joseph's Church.
  • Exterior of the Basilica of the Annunciation.
  • Nazareth is now divided among Christians, Jews, and Muslims. They don't all see eye to eye. In this photo, the Basilica's unusual dome is at the right. A firebrand imam harangues loudly every Friday from a small town square below the sign.
