  • Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the holiest Christian site in the Old City, the place where Jesus was nailed to the cross, died and rose from the dead. It was built in 326 AD at the behest of Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine. It is on the site of a prior temple to Jupiter and Venus, which Helena thought was constructed to hide the actual site of Jesus' last moments. The church has been destroyed several times my Muslims, earthquakes, and fires. The present restoration dates to 1959, but it is a restoration, not a new building.
