Gearrannan Blackhouse Village-When you walk down to the restored village you feel as if you have gone 300 years into the past. The village was inhabited until 1974 when the last occupants moved into modern houses and the village was left to nature. In 1989 the local community trust - the Garenin Trust, started to renovate and restore the croft village, and once again it is fully occupied.

  • Peat provides fuel for heat and cooking. Electricity is imported by cable from Scotish Hydro on the mainland, 60 miles away.
  • A typical room. Note the spinning wheel in the room at the back. Wool is spun to make Harris tweed.
  • A scrap of Harris tweed.

  • Peat, the actual color. (It looks brown in other pictures. Don't believe them.)
  • Another chimney, this one is in action.
  • Weaving Harris tweed, 6"/hour.
  • The open Atlantic is in the background. Next land is Greenland! This is a very stormy location!
  • A young family occupies the house. They own sheep.
  • Three shepherds heading off to gather the flock for shearing. Or muttonizing.
  • 20 minutes later. The sheep are kindof moseying along.
  • The Border Collie gets into the action; the sheep get a move-on! (Note the geeeeenuwine shepherd's crook. First one I've ever seen in use!)
